Although moving into a new home is an exciting time for parents, for children it can often be a different story. Although moving is a natural part of life that often offers a much-needed fresh start, this doesn’t necessarily mean that kids understand how to navigate the emotions associated with a significant life change such as relocating.

As with many life experiences, books are a fantastic way to help children understand and process what is going on around them. Whether you’re moving to a different street, different town or different country, here are some of the best books to help your kids prepare for your upcoming house move.

1. New House, Same Underwear by Brenda Li

Age 2 - 7 years

This title from the Pig in Jeans series is sure to become a favourite amongst your kids in no time! With an adorable title that will even make adults want to read it, this book reassures children that no matter where you are located, family will always stay the same.

2. The Berenstain Bears’ Moving Day by Stan and Jan Berenstain

Age 3 - 7 years

The Berenstain family has lived in the hearts of families for generations, and with so many valuable lessons in each instalmment, it’s easy to see why! In Moving Day, we see Mama, Papa and Brother pack up, say heartfelt goodbyes to friends and move from the mountains and into their beloved tree house down the sunny dirt road. Although published in the ‘80s, the message of this classic story stays the same: everybody has to say goodbye sometimes, and that’s okay!

3. My Very Exciting, Sorta Scary, Big Move by Lori Attanasio Woodring Ph.D

Age 5 - 11 years

The title of this book alone perfectly illustrates all of the mixed emotions that come with moving home. This one-of-a-kind workbook guides kids step-by-step through the moving process, including navigating change, coping with big emotions, learning how to say goodbye, tips for making new friends and much more. Lovely illustrations and engaging activities encourage your children to take control of their feelings and experiences and become active participants in their exciting new adventure.

4. Alexander, Who’s Not (Do You Hear Me? I Mean It!) Going to Move by Judith Viorst

Age 4 - 8 years

This installment in the Alexander series sees him dealing with the trials and tribulations of moving home. Judith Viorst cleverly utilises her trademark humour to discuss issues such as leaving friends, favourite teams and generally all he knows, behind. This book is great for validating any fears and frustrations that your children might be feeling in the lead up to a house move.
