Moving house can be an extremely difficult decision to make. There are so many things to consider when thinking about making the move; where shall I move? What sort of house am I looking for? Are there a lot of facilities nearby? Nevertheless, moving house can be one of the most exciting times in our lives, providing you with the chance to start afresh and create new memories in a completely new environment. Considering that moving house involves so many different processes and tasks, it can be quite easy to miss the little details that make the relocation process as smooth as possible. Forgetting to complete certain tasks means that you run into further problems further down the line, so it’s best to become familiar with what you need to do at the earliest opportunity

At Rose Removals, we’re a house removals company that takes the pressure off by providing high-quality furniture removal, packing services and self-storage solutions. Covering areas such as Exeter and Devon, we’re here to give you a helping hand when you need it most. Moving house, understandably, has a reputation for being stressful and overwhelming, that’s why the team at Essex Removals have compiled a list of things you should look to do and things you should avoid.

From using a house removals company to staying on top of paperwork, here are a few do’s and don'ts you should follow when moving house!

Do This:

●     Make Use of Furniture Removal Companies - Whilst you might be able to pack up your smaller items into cardboard boxes, moving furniture is much more of a task. Attempting to transport a sofa or chest of drawers from one property to the next can be an extremely difficult job, so in this case it’s best to hire a professional company to do the heavy work for you! The last thing you want when moving house is to put your back out, so why not get someone else to do the lifting for you? House removal companies are able to use their spacious vans to pack all of your bulky furniture, saving you many trips back and forth. It’s not just furniture that they can help you move, but also other items such as pianos, kitchen appliances, mattresses and other electrical items.

●     Stay on Top of Paperwork - Although you might want to avoid it as much as possible, legal paperwork is just part and parcel of the moving process. Neglecting paperwork and allowing it to grow into a mountain of documents will only make it more stressful when you actually need to complete it. Deadlines are often set with these legal documents, meaning that your whole house move could be in jeopardy if you don’t stay on top of paperwork. A further precaution you should consider taking is scanning your paperwork and backing it up on a USB stick. By doing so, you have another location where your important documents are stored. Nobody wants to lose out on their dream house as a result of paperwork, so make sure it’s completed on time!

●     Rubbish Clearance is Key - When moving house, it’s highly unlikely that you won’t need to take all of your items to the new property. You might find that some of your belongings are simply of no longer use to you, and the best thing to do is to dispose of them. In this case, you can either donate clothes, toys and other appliances to charities or alternatively, hire a rubbish clearance company. Visiting the tip to dispose of your items is not only time-consuming, but it’s not exactly great for the environment either. Hiring a professional rubbish clearance company allows you to save time, but also means you’re disposing of your waste in a more environmentally friendly way.

●     Plan and Prepare - The old saying ‘fail to prepare, prepare to fail’ applies to many different scenarios, and that’s no different when it comes to moving house. Think ahead and try to plan in advance for the little details. For instance, it’s worth thinking about whether you need to take a couple of days off work. In addition to this, you need to remember that your address will change, therefore you need to start changing your documents to show that you’re now going to live at this address. Your GP, dentist, employer, local council, and utility companies are just some of the people you should be contacting to notify them of your change of address. Completing these little details as early as possible will save you more time further down the line.

Don’t Do This:

●     Go Solo! - Although you’re the one making the move, this doesn’t mean that you should do everything by yourself. As touched on multiple times already, moving house can be one hell of a task, so why not get some of your friends and family involved too to spread the workload? Whether it be asking them to help you pack or look after the kids and pets whilst you sort out the house, every little helps. Not only can this make you complete the job quicker, but it can make it more enjoyable too.

●     Panic! - It’s inevitable that the process can feel overwhelming at times, but the best thing to do in this situation is to remain calm and try not to rush anything. Taking your time and being organised will go a long way to making the relocation process as seamless as possible. If you panic, then there’s a chance that you’ll make rash decisions. It’s also recommended that you avoid doing everything at once, otherwise you might see yourself getting burnt out. Completing tasks in small chunks will make the process less exhausting, physically and emotionally.

●     Neglect Packing Materials - If you’re thinking of just shifting all of your belongings into a car without any organised plan, the unpacking process will undoubtedly be twice as stressful. Investing in items such as cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, mattress covers and settee covers will not only keep your items neatly organised, but it will also prevent them from becoming damaged during the move. The worst thing you want is to arrive at your new property with all of your plates, dishes and mugs smashed. With this in mind, packing services should be on the top of your agenda when it comes to moving house.

●     Forget the Last Walkthrough - Saying your final goodbye to your house can either be an emotional one or alternatively, you might be eagerly waiting to get into your new property. Despite this, giving your house one last check is something that should certainly not go under the radar. Look to see whether you have left any possessions in the house or if there is any food left in the fridge. Are all of your rooms completely clear, as well as the garage? It might even be a good idea to make a checklist of all the different rooms, ticking them off once you’re completely sure that everything has been removed and packed up. Once this is done, then it’s time to start a new journey at your next home!
