A Moving Company’s Guide to Winter Moves

Rose Removals • Aug 02, 2019
Winter on the road

For many, winter is one of the busiest seasons of the year. From preparing for festivities to juggling a hectic work schedule, winter can be stressful to say the least, which begs the question: why would anyone move home during the colder months? Whilst it may seem nonsensical, relocating in winter can actually be a lot cheaper than at other times of year and house removal companies usually have a lot more availability.

Whilst a move in winter is unlikely to be stress-free, it could be just the ticket to pinching pennies, and what could be better than being settled in your new abode in time for the Christmas period? There are many reasons why upping sticks in winter is a good move, however, it’s extremely important to be aware of potential pitfalls.

British weather can be unpredictable at the best of times and in the depths of winter, temperatures can be extreme, winds can be strong and of course, there’s always the possibility of snowfall. Moving home is never an easy feat, but when you’re battling with the elements, the job can seem twice as hard. However, it’s important not to be deterred. There are plenty of tactics and preventative measures you can put in place to ensure your winter move goes without a hitch, and once you’re out of the cold, you can enjoy a steaming cup of tea (or mulled wine if you’d prefer!) to warm yourself up in your brand new home.

Below, we’ve made a list of a few pointers to consider before moving day to ensure that when it arrives, your transition from A to B is as smooth as possible.

Home removal packing tips for winter

Packing is one of the most time-consuming aspects of moving home and during winter, this can feel like even more of an uphill struggle. However, there are things you can do to ensure you’re packing up your home with the utmost efficiency.

Whilst it’s important to be organised in terms of what date you begin packing, the time of day is also a crucial factor to consider. The days are shorter in winter and as a result, it gets darker much earlier. So, to take advantage of the daylight whilst you have it, we’d advise packing early in the morning to make the process easier on yourself.

As previously mentioned, harsh weather conditions are inevitable in winter and whilst it’s difficult to predict exactly what the elements will have in store for the big day, there are preventative measures you can take to ensure your valuables aren’t at risk of damage. Plastic sheets can be used to shield cardboard boxes from torrential rainfall, or you could even purchase plastic containers for maximum protection. Avoid using any boxes that don’t have lids and make sure all containers are tightly sealed to guarantee nothing gets damaged in transit.

Clear a path and plan your route

An icy path can be treacherous to walk across, especially if you’re carrying a heavy box or bulky piece of furniture. In addition to being uncomfortable, cold weather can also be potentially dangerous if the correct precautions aren’t taken to prevent trips and falls, so it’s essential that this is taken care of before any heavy lifting begins.

If there has been heavy snowfall overnight, make sure you clear a path to allow people to enter and exit your property with ease and clear any snow away from your doorway for maximum safety. Secondly, if your front garden is caked in snow, it’s likely that some of the roads will be as well. With this in mind, it’s essential to plan your route carefully and perhaps try to avoid any steep hills or roads that are in poor condition.

In addition to being a nuisance to drive in, snow can also be extremely messy, and when you have lots of people trudging in and out of your property with boxes, it’s important to protect your floor from the moisture. Whether you have carpet or hardwood floors, lay down some plastic sheets or flattened cardboard boxes as this will prevent your floors from getting damaged, leaving things in a good state for the new tenants.

Wrap up warm

It’s not uncommon to work up a bit of a sweat when lugging heavy boxes from A to B, but when the wind is howling and the rain is coming down hard, warm layers are essential. From cosy jumpers and waterproof coats to thick gloves and sturdy footwear, there are countless things you can wear to ensure you stay safe and warm in adverse weather conditions.

If your hands are numb and you’re drenched in rain, your move is likely to take a lot longer and is bound to be a supremely unpleasant experience. So, be sure to get out your winter attire and fill some travel cups with steaming hot coffee to give you and your movers a bit of a boost.

Get the heating on

So, after hours of lifting and lugging heavy boxes in the freezing cold, you’re finally on your way to your brand new abode. Whilst you’ll likely be exhausted, you’ll also be thinking of what to do when you arrive. Perhaps you want to unpack straight away to make the place feel more like home, or maybe you’re looking forward to a much-needed rest. However, before you do anything, make sure you switch on the heating and check that all the radiators are on to allow your new home to get warm and cosy.

When you’ve been battling the elements for the best part of the day, it can be difficult to warm up and you’ll likely need all the help you can get. In addition to making your new property feel homely, turning up the heating will help you warm up quickly, ensuring you’re ready to unpack and start the next chapter in your brand new home.

Rely on a removals company

Enlisting the help of friends and family to help you move is all well and good, but when you hire a professional removals company, you can guarantee they’ll be prepared for all eventualities. In addition to supplying top-quality packing materials to protect your valuables from extreme weather, many removal companies offer to assist with the packing process to ensure that everything is properly protected in transit.

An experienced removals business will likely have worked in all weather conditions and as a result, they’ll be specially trained on how best to handle it. They will also have a varied fleet that’s been prepared for winter and they’ll be well versed on transporting items safely whatever the weather.

Winter weather can present a lot of obstacles when it comes to relocating, but when you hire a reputable removal company, you can guarantee that these will be tackled efficiently and with ease to ensure your move doesn’t get rained off.
