Carrying out House Removals in the Devon Rain

If you’re planning a move in Devon, you probably haven’t thought about whether it will be on a rainy day! Although we’re used to our fair share of stormy weather in this lovely county, somehow we think that the sun will be shining on the day we decide to move, particularly as many people move during summer holidays. Unfortunately, it doesn’t really matter what month it is, you can’t plan the weather, and as removals normally take place on quite a tight schedule, there isn’t much room for delays. What you can do is be prepared. Rose Removals, house removals and shipping specialists in Devon, are here to help you with that!

Here are a few tips to make sure that your move goes to plan, come rain or shine!

1. Start packing now!

Ok, maybe not this second, but if you’re moving in less than a month then plan to get started around 2 weeks before you move. If you leave it longer, you’ll be in a panic by moving day and goods shoved in on top of boxes are likely to fall into a wet puddle when you’re in a rush. If you need to know about packing materials, talk to us!

Here’s how you can protect your worldly goods from the elements:

·Close all packed boxes then fill any gaps with newspapers. You can use plastic containers to ensure everything stays dry, but if it’s warm at all, the goods in there will sweat.

  • Wrap furniture in blankets, then with tape, then stretch wrap in case of rain
  • Cover your mattresses in stretch wrap so they don’t get damp
  • Put lots of tape around your cardboard boxes
  • Stacks of clothing can go in plastic bags, make sure they have no holes
  • Put pictures and paintings in stretch wrap to protect the

2. Check the weather forecast

Knowing what’s coming will help you be prepared. Check the weather forecast a week in advance and then again a couple of days before and the day before the move. Then you can make additional arrangements if required. Compare two websites such as BBC weather and Accuweather for a broader picture.

3. Make sure your family and your goods are safe

There are some other steps you can take to ensure everyone’s safety throughout the removals process:

  • Wear rain gear and gloves – It’s a no-brainer, but make sure you haven’t packed up your rain gear. Wear rubber boots so you won’t slip and use gloves so that you have a good grip.
  • Place cardboard cutouts on the ground – These will prevent slipping and mean that mud won’t be tracked into the house that you have just cleaned!
  • Drive carefully – Consider the state of the road, heavy rain slows everything down. Drive with care and caution.
