Europe is famed as one of the best places to live in the world. The continent is steeped in a fascinating history with books, songs and buildings laden with reminders of its enchanting past. There were the ancient Greeks with their philosophers and conquerors. The Romans with their gladiators and chariots and the European revolutions spearheaded by Napoleon and his infamous invasions. It’s safe to say that Europe is one of the most varied and enthralling continents our planet has on offer.

It's not just culture that you’ll find in continental Europe, though. You’ll also find some of the most diverse landscapes found anywhere in the world. The unique geography of the continent means you can go from alpine mountains to sun-kissed beaches in just a few hours' drive. There's also arctic wilderness and ancient forests, all just a few hours from one another.

It’s hardly a surprise then that as of 2019, over half a million British citizens called Spain, France or Germany home. So, what are the ten best European cities to relocate to?

10: Oslo, Norway

The Norwegian city of Oslo boasts some of the finest examples of Baroque architecture anywhere on the planet. The city is a sprawling oasis of restaurants and bars bound to steal the heart of any avid traveller. You’ll also have over 30 museums showcasing some of the best Norwegian history and culture right at your doorstep.

Aside from the obvious benefits of living in such a historic city, you’ll be a stone's throw from some of the best wilderness Europe has. Norway is famed for its ancient Fjords. The huge saltwater lakes were formed in the ice age and certainly capture visitors' attention with their towering mountains and mysterious waters.

9: Cologne, Germany

The city of Cologne is one of the oldest in Europe. Founded in the first century by the Romans, Cologne was once home to the Archbishop and became an incredibly important city in Mediaeval Germany. During World War Two, the city was heavily bombed by the British RAF and lost roughly 90% of its buildings to bombs and fires.

However, many of the old buildings have been restored and the areas that were too damaged have been transformed with many strikingly new modern buildings. Choosing Cologne, as your new home, would also be a great choice if you love museums, as the city is filled with galleries and ancient artefacts to explore.

8: Dublin, Ireland

Dublin is the capital of The Republic of Ireland and hosts a variety of big businesses such as Google, Facebook and Dropbox. This makes the city a great pick for the young professionals out there. Dublin's fairly small footprint means the city is a hive of activity and the streets light up with energy at night. This compact nature also means it's easy enough to escape the hectic lifestyle of the city and retreat into the idyllic Irish countryside. Whether you're a professional looking for a lively and dynamic lifestyle or someone who yearns for the tranquillity of nature, Dublin is a great option.

7: Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Heralded as the Venice of the north Amsterdam’s weaving network of canals is often enough on its own to inspire people to relocate. The city is a multicultural hub for art and culture boasting some of the most famous galleries in Europe. Amsterdam is also a particular favourite among the British due to the Dutch people’s ability to speak English. This means that you’ll likely find it much easier to make friends and settle into the culture of life in the Netherlands. There are also a whole host of parks as well as world-famous bars and restaurants for you to enjoy.

6: Stockholm, Sweden

Stockholm is Sweden's largest city and its capital. The city is one of the oldest in Europe and features the renowned 13th-century Storkyrkan Cathedral. One of the most unique things about the city is its geography. Stockholm is built on 14 different islands which are connected by 50 bridges. The city also hosts a fleet of water taxi boats to get commuters and tourists from A to B.

Aside from the usual museums and galleries, Stockholm is a fantastic example of Europe's brilliant standard of living. The city prides itself on its democratic socialism and is clean and ordered as a result.

5: Barcelona, Spain

Perhaps one of the most diverse cities in Europe, Barcelona, has a myriad of things on offer. First off, the city is home to one of the biggest football clubs in the world and features the awe-inspiring stadium, Camp Nou. The football ground can host a staggering 99,354 people, making it one of the largest in the world.

Aside from football, there is also the famous La Sagrada Familia, a Catholic church designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi. As well as these impressive landmarks, the city also has an outstanding reputation for good food and a brilliant nightlife. Rest assured, you won’t find yourself with nothing to do on a Saturday afternoon.

4: Madrid, Spain

Madrid is Spain's capital city. So, it's no surprise that it's a bustling multicultural metropolis with a variety of different Spanish and European influences dotted throughout. Another benefit that comes with moving to a capital city is the huge amount of job opportunities, and Madrid is no different. The city has a young personality and job roles are often vibrant and fulfilling. Madrid's unique geography places it almost directly in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula, making it the perfect starting point if you want to explore Portugal or Spain. Of course, you’ll also have the privilege of wall-to-wall sunshine almost all year round.

3: Milan, Italy

Milan is world famous for its ornate architecture and luxurious nature. The streets of the city alone are enough to make most people smile. They draw you in with their dazzling colours and magical alleyways.

There are, however, many more practical benefits that come with moving to Milan. The city is well known as a vibrant hub for many businesses, with many fashion, design and trade companies choosing to base themselves there. This has turned Milan into the highest-employed city in Italy with the unemployment rate standing at around 5.5%. The city is also one of the easiest places in Italy to find accommodation as the housing market is fairly stable.

One of the best benefits of living in a place like Milan is the proximity to nature and other spectacular areas. Milan is located at the northern tip of Italy and finds itself in the shadow of the European Alps. What's, more famous cities such as Venice and Turin are also in the north of the country, so you can easily visit them.

2: Rome, Italy

Rome is arguably one of the most famous cities in the world, and its history needs no introduction. Despite many believing the city was founded by the Romans, historians now believe there is evidence of settlers in the area early as the 10th century BC. Nevertheless, the city was made rich and famous by the Roman Empire and its influence remains clear today. There’s the Colosseum and Pantheon, to name just a couple of ancient Roman landmarks that remain standing today.

Aside from walking the streets of genuine history, there are some more practical benefits to relocating to the city. The Italian public transport system is world-renowned for its ease of use and efficiency, and the healthcare options are also extremely reliable.

As if you could sell it anymore, we haven’t even mentioned the food yet. Italy is famous for its food and Rome is no different. The city is littered with world-class restaurants, so you’ll certainly be spoilt for choice.

1: Paris, France

Arguably the most famous city in Europe, Paris is on the bucket list of any serious traveller. Aside from the city’s world-famous landmark (the Eiffel Tower), there are many other reasons to move to this famous metropolis. The culture is renowned across the globe, with cafes and outstanding restaurants popping up on every street corner.

There are not only cultural benefits, though. The working week is capped at 35 hours and every hour you do over this is paid extra. 30% of French taxes also go to welfare and social funds so your family will have all the support it needs.
