Top Tips for House Removals in Devon

Moving house is an exciting time – the anticipation of your new home, a new start, maybe a new area and new experiences, especially with the thought of an exotic locale and the overseas removals experience. However, even with all that excitement, most of us will draw a sharp intake of breath, when someone mentions packing. What’s staying? What’s going? What’s going into storage ? The logistics can seem overwhelming, but that’s where experts like Rose Removals come in. As the leading removals company in Devon, we’ve compiled some helpful tips to make your move as smooth as possible.

1. Many hands make light work

This is the time to get your friends around. Pretty much everyone has had to move at some point and if they haven’t yet, they will in the future, so you can promise to repay them at a later date. Some tasty snacks and a cool beer at the end of the day will also be enough for your good mates to pitch in and help with the packing. Delegate different tasks so that they’ll feel a sense of achievement rather than aimlessly wandering room to room in search of things to bubble wrap. Organisation goes a long way here if you have a few people to help sorting and packing.

2. Make a “necessities” box

When you reach your new place, there are some items that you’ll want out of the box first, so rather than rooting around, get a big black marker and write NECESSITIES on the side of one box, and make sure that the essentials are in there. Some recommendations for this are your kettle, mugs and toilet roll. You can also put in a couple of plates, some blankets and cutlery (particularly a knife – to cut through the wrapping!) so that you don’t have to go through tons of boxes looking for things on your very first night. Also have the teabags, milk and sugar handy so that you don’t have to nip off to the shop – your other half may not thank you for it!

3. Colour code all your boxes

Colour coding may seem like a silly idea at first, like child’s play (It can be a good task to assign to the older kids) but it will make your life so much easier when moving to your new home in Devon. Simply code the boxes per room – i.e. blue for the bathroom, green for the kitchen, red for the bedroom etc. Most packing boxes are brown but you can add coloured tabs or sheets. This is also helpful for moving companies so they know which box goes where in the new place.

4 . Don’t overpack boxes

You may want to use as few boxes as possible but it’s not really going to work out well for anyone. Packing materials are built to withstand a certain weight, and you don’t want your precious goods falling in the street because the box is overloaded. Overpacked boxes can also crush smaller ones, so just add a few more to be on the safe side.

5 . Designate rubbish bags

If you decide to use black bags for packing items and rubbish, make sure you know which is which! Avoid a situation where someone throws out some personal items like clothing, thinking that it’s to be thrown out!
